In his follow up to Hunger, Director McQueen delivers this insight into family siblings who have vivid sexual tendencies, possibly shaped and distorted by childhood abuse. The film is played out in New York, where Brandon (Michael Fassbender) and Sissy (Carey Mulligan) each influence, and are influenced by, the small circle of friends and colleagues who they draw into their sexually addicted world, one where fantasy is close to reality. Complex, audacious in its forthright portrayals, Shame disturbs and gets under the skin with superb performances from the principal characters that are reinforced by McQueen’s technique for illuminating difficult and almost taboo behaviours through his remarkable cinematography.
