In 1770s Denmark the Royal Court was embroiled in scandal when the German Doctor Johann Struensee had an affair with Queen Caroline, who hailed from England. Struensee, a social progressive, became the power controlling the mentally ill King Christian VII, wresting power away from the conservative, repressive regime for over six months - events which preceded the French revolution.
