Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes the title has echoes of the 1948 classic ‘Bicycle Thieves’. 11 year old Cyril Catoul is dumped in a children’s home by his single, dispirited father. The fiery tempered boy can’t believe that his father has taken and sold his bike. He thinks that his father must be keeping the bike for him, ignoring all the evidence that his father wants to be rid of him. The lack of a father figure sees him being drawn into the circle of a local gang. However, Cyril finds a loving protector in the form of Samantha, a hairdresser, who puts up with his tantrums and violence and provides unconditional love.
